Nikkor AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8 G IF-ED VR (test sample $1850 in refurbished version, new version with VR II is $2200)
Nikkor AF 80-200mm f/2.8D ED (used only, $800 to $1000 approximately)
Nikkor AF-S 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G IF-ED VR (about $500 or 600 new)
– If you disreagard the readings from 300mm for the 70-300 and check at equal apertures, the output is VERY similar.
– One could wish for readings at 135mm for the 70-300 – to be able to compare it there to.
– But I would be surprised if it would alter the impression one gets out of these figures.
You actually can’t go wrong here, you just might end up spending (and/or carrying!) more than you need.

A note about the 70-300: It doesn’t work well with focal length extenders (1.4, 1.7, 2.0x …)
