“If you’re doing stand development you could always try mixing in some Xtol (in the ratio 1 Rodinal + 20 Xtol stock + 80 water) which has worked for me to reduce grain for faster films. Or you could try Thornton’s suggestion of adding sodium ascorbate at 1g/L to a 1+100 dilution of Rodinal. Not ascorbic acid, though, because that lowers the pH.
I’ve been told that an easy way to get sodium ascorbate is to mix 0.5g of baking soda with 1g of ascorbic acid in a little water and wait for the fizz to stop. Add water to 1L and mix in the Rodinal.

Use:
Barry Thornton’s suggestion about using Sodium Metaborate/Kodalk: Make a solution of 2 heaped teaspoons to 1 litre and develop your film for half to two thirds of the usual time. Dump the developer, pour in the Sodium Metaborate solution, invert once and let it stand for 3 minutes. Then dump that, stop, wash, fix etc. as normal.
Thornton suggested this because it gives you an automatic contrast adjustment like in a two bath developer that makes the images easier to print or scan.
At the very end:
…. "Simply use your normal standard developer (T-Max, ID11, llfotech, HC110, Econotol, Perceptol etc.) for half to two thirds of the maker’s stated time as Bath A, drain it off, and use the teaspoon-measured Bath B for 3 minutes at the same temperature as Bath A. You may have to fine tune Bath A time by experience. For all 2 baths stop and fix afterwards in the usual way after Bath B, but not between the two baths"
I’m replacing 10g/L "metaborate" based on a substitution formula I found somehwere: 7.5g Borax and 1.5g Sodium Hydroxide (I’m using decahydrate Borax, Na2B4O7·10H2O and NaOH).
The above photos were developed with 9 and 1.8g in 1 liter water – for a 12g metaborate recipe. (12/10 of the above)
Now compare that to "D23" and "Barry Thornton higher definition formula" as stated on the "continue" page above.
